People who deny the existence of dragons are often eaten by dragons. From within.

-Ursula K. LeGuin

Illuminated is a show of work by three women who all reside in Athens County, Ohio, and are friends

through art making. Each artist was inspired by themes of the medieval, the fantastical, and how

these themes could shed light on the troubled age we are currently living through. Although they

approached exploring these concepts in their own way, and in their own medium, this show is

the culmination of a collaborative process.

About the artists behind Illuminated:

Erin Noel Hogan believes that each person has unique inner fiercenesses and magic they must

cultivate and then make manifest from resources they already posses. Naming these qualities as

her inner dragons, she has upcycled literal dragons from reclaimed fabric and wire.

Emily Beveridge was inspired specifically by the stories and iconography of Medieval Female

Saints. She wanted to highlight the struggle, but also the perseverance of these women. Emily’s

paintings are meant to be a modern day contemplation of these historic women, whose stories

still resonate to this day.

Danette Pratt admires science and is drawn to its rational constructions of reality, but desires

monsters and creatures of the dark for her artwork. The Illuminated creatures of the Middle

Ages, the drolleries hidden in the margins of priceless handmade books, the Dragons... have

always prompted her desire to create beasts in her fabricated drawings and textile work.
